The European Conceptual Framework for Occupational Therapy (EFCOT) defines about twenty occupational therapy key terms and groups them into clusters belonging to the inner world of the person performing the occupation or to the outer world in which the person performs an occupation. Between the inner and outer world is the interface world. Among the concepts of the conceptual framework, occupational therapists can choose those that facilitate the development of their intervention especially those of performance, engagement and participation. Participation as an involvement in life situations within a social context is a common goal in occupational therapy made possible by performances, namely the ability to choose, organise and carrying out occupations. But the links between participation and performances are complex: large performances do not imply a large participation and conversely excellent participation accommodates poor performances. Engagement as a sense of involvement choice, positive meaning and commitment while performing an occupation contributes to enable performance as well as participation, but also the latter despite a poor performance.
